How can you politely and lovingly tell someone that you don’t like a gift?

I love my boyfriend. He’s really sweet and thoughtful. I can tell that he thought about me and my likes and interests when he got me his gift. I mean, I love my cats and he got me a decorative cat plate. But, he forgot that I’m not a little old lady with cats. He forgot to stop and picture what our apartment will look like decorated with the cat plate and what his parents gave us, a cat wall clock and a dog wall clock. We are in college, not on the verge of living in elderly care! I mean, the gifts are cute and sweet and thoughtful, but I don’t know what to tell him. He asked me what I thought of them, and I want to be honest, but I don’t want to hurt his feelings. What can I say?

Sheesh, you never tell someone that you don’t like a gift. It is incredibly rude very bad manners.

I also love my cats and my husband also got me a cat figurine. It is very, very old crazy cat lady ugly. I put it on a shelf on the opposite wall from the TV (his back is to it). The next week I wrapped it up and put it in a box. That was about 4 years ago and he still has no idea that it is missing.
